hi everyone, i don't see many guys in this tribe, so i hope i'm not out of line by joining, but i would really like to learn how to belly dance, or is it a woman only thing. i'm 60 and in good shape considering, i love to dance and if there is a male version of belly dance i want to do it. there is not any place locally that i know of that teaches this kind of dancing. i live in a small west texas town just north of odessa. but go to radical faerie gatherings and plan to start going to burning man in austin. i think i would like to combine belly dance and poi, is this possible? help please, thanks, bone

Wed, December 29, 2004 - 9:19 PMyou have come to the right place, and welcome!
I'll let the individual teachers speak for themselves. When you combine poi and BD, you'll teach the rest of us, right? -

Re: new to the tribe
Thu, December 30, 2004 - 7:44 AMYou won't be going to *Burning man in Austin*--Burning Man isn't a franchise (yet :) Sorry, a pet peeve of mine. You'll be thinking of Flipside, a regional, burning man event.
www.burningflipside.com
I have a lot of friends that have gone and have a blast. better kep your eye opn, tix go on sale soon.
If you go, talk to people there about local classes and whatnot. usually someone knows someone that can send you in the direction you're looking for.
Have fun! -

Fri, December 31, 2004 - 12:39 PMI don't know. Your best bet would be to check the website (burningflipside.com) and if there's no info there, email the Flipside people. Good luck!

Re: new to the tribe
Tue, January 4, 2005 - 5:44 PMYay Flipside! Yay regional burning events (I participate in Playa del Fuego, in Delaware, and have never made Flipside because *sob* they overlap, but one day . . . )
Remember, if there isn't a camp you can always start one! Our rag-tag group of friends that camped together is slowly turning into a theme camp with a Baltimore flavour: Camp Hon. Grab some like minded friends and go for it!
Good luck with your dancing - sounds like you've got lots of info to work with.

Re: new to the tribe
Fri, December 31, 2004 - 4:22 PMPoi and belly dance is quite a popular fusion right now. Stick around and you will get to meet plenty of dancers (men and women) who enjoy these arts in tandem.
Welcome! -

Re: new to the tribe
Sun, January 2, 2005 - 12:05 PMHi there! For a very impressive male bellydancer, check out Hahbi 'Ru: www.hahbiru.com/
I spin poi and bellydance, and haven't done them together much... They influence each other to be sure, and I will sometimes do both at a performance, but doing them simultaneously would prove difficult. Just because they both require concentration, and swinging my hips while doing a complicated poi pattern is tricky... maybe I just need more practice. :) I have seen a girl shimmy while doing simple poi moves and it was nice.
As far as having a poi spinner and a bellydancer performing at the same time, it could be very cool. To be honest, I think the fact that someone is swinging fire tends to overpower the fact that someone is bellydancing, but I would be very interested in seeing a show with both. Fire fans and fire fingers go perfectly with bellydancing, for sure. There definitely is a growing scene of folks who are interested in bellydancing and fire.
Good luck and have fun! -
