Hi Everyone,
I am struggling to find music and am coming to you for help.
The troupe I am in performs ATS/ITS, and I am searching for more traditional sounding music (in other words, I'm trying to stay away from modern/drum machine/dance club type belly dance music) that is the right tempo for performing fast moves. I have exhausted my Helm and Solace collections, so if you have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it!
I love the modern stuff too, so that might be another question for another time... :)

Re: Medium/Fast Tempo Music
Wed, June 3, 2009 - 8:22 AMMy students and I have come to really enjoy some of the music from the mid-west group Felahi. They have a self made CD, Phase One. Their music is available as MP3 downloads from Amazon and other sources. The music group plays for the ATS troupe Totally Northern Tribal, so is very ATS/ITS friendly. :) We especially like dancing to Banat Iskandaria and Inca Road. Also, since you didn't mention them, Gypsy Caravan has some absolutely wonderful music. One of our favorites is Giza from the Migration CD.
I'm looking forward to hearing others' suggestions... always on the look-out! :0)

Re: Medium/Fast Tempo Music
Wed, June 3, 2009 - 9:57 AMThese folks make BEAUTIFUL music. I know we've used this in techniques class before. There aren't any "previews" of the songs, per se, but there is a very detailed description of each song, explaining the beats, timing, etc.
And I've seen them LIVE. :)
I think they may have a preview feature on itunes, but I'm at work right now and can't install it on my computer. DRAT!

Wed, June 3, 2009 - 10:53 AMMaybe try something from The Toids? www.toids.org/
They have samples of their songs on their website, and have a good variety of fast and slow songs :)
And they're incredibly catchy.

Wed, June 3, 2009 - 12:01 PMRuben von Rompaey or Knossos come to mind. You can buy either from EMP CDs (it's a production company run by the same guy behind Solace). www.empcds.com/store.html You can also download the music from Amazon/iTunes. Ruben is more drum music (his latest album incorporates more wind instruments) and Knossos is primarily oud music. Both very good and more traditional sounding.

So here is my best recommendation IN THE WORLD for ATS music! You ready??!
Carolena has it ALL on her website, in GREAT DETAIL.
For instance, the Folkloric Music section here:
www.fcbd.com/catalog/index.php
And then Carolena painstakingly wrote about each track, its pacing, the main instruments it may utilize, and what it's appropriate for dancewise (if at all). Like this:
1. Abu Kahrage Mizmar Group 5:58 fast - we call this #1Ghawazee, and not just because of it's track order. Recorded live, it's a challenge to dance to, but so exciting!
2. Raqs 4:43 fast - salmeya, rebab, tar, darabukka
3. Ghaziyeh Dance 4:16 fast - doumbec, zils
4. Raqs Al Ghawazee 4:36 varying tempo - slow intro, fast, with several short tempo changes. Mizmar, doumbec.
5. Stick Dance 2:51 medium fast - evenly phrased with a lilting melody. Doumbec, salameya
6. Dance Music 6:34 varying tempo - slow intro, fast, with several short tempo changes. Mizmar, salameya, doumbec.
7. Met’qal Song-Dayati Mali 2:01 medium fast - a classic Egyptian folksong
8. Mizmar Dance Medley 6:48 varying tempo - slow intro, fast, with several short tempo changes. Mizmar, zils, doumbec, female vocals
9. Mazin Song-Qali Al Waha 3:36 medium - mizmar, doumbec, claps, female vocals
10. Rabab Piece-Bambutia 2:50 fast - mizmar, doumbec
11. Music for the Banat Mazin 13:22 varying tempos - three songs; Fayn Ya Sabaya, Ghawazee Dance, Eddi'lu
Then CLICK! You can buy them right there from FC and support a bellydance artist you love!
Check it out! -

Re: Medium/Fast Tempo Music
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 10:14 AMCarolena/Fat Chance is an awesome resource.
I've got a few more to add that are not on their list (I think):
Gypsy Caravan and their newer incarnation Mizna are full of really good traditional-sounding tunes www.gypsycaravan.us. I think my favorite CD is Awakening, followed closely by Quest.
Domba's CD "Evocation" has several great fast and medium tracks, plus some nice slow ones (and a couple African dance numbers). "Ruma Bari" is a great fun song that is fast and then gets faster..whee!
Americanistan's CD "Tribalation!" is ALL good for tribal...of course I did collaborate on this CD (though I get no $ from sales) so I'm not unbiased. :) But it has several good fast tracks with zurna and heavy drums (and this cool slow one with a yuembe that sounds all slithery and is perfect for sword.) www.americanistan.com
Raquy and the Cavemen have some hot tunes--especially their CDs Jordon (with Nubian, Caravan, and Makrisita) and Mischief (with Dalia and Missr!) www.raquyandthecavemen.com
Have fun aquiring more music...

Tue, June 30, 2009 - 7:07 PMMahmoud Fadl, Musicians of the Nile, Aisha Ali's field recordings, a lot of Hossam Ramzy - all excellent, perfect for ATS.
