Im sure this has been discussed - probably at great length before but here goes:
American tribal style = Carolina Nericcio format.
Improvisational tribal style = other troupe's fromat's who have made modifications to ATS but use the improv & cues system.
International Tribal style = is what? Improv style as performed outside of America?
Just trying to get my names straight. : )

Re: ATS AND ITS
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 6:29 AMI haven't heard of international tribal style, but hope there's not ANOTHER name to add to the mix. It's hard enough keeping things straight as it is! -

Re: ATS AND ITS
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 8:24 AMI have heard someone occasionally use International Tribal Style as an "alternative" to Improv Trible Style a few years back but as far as I am aware they were intended to be the same thing... An alternative name to be used by those that are based in ATS but have added to or altered moves, queues and transitions.

Re: ATS AND ITS
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 12:37 PMNever heard of International Tribal Style. I am guessing it has more to do with people in other countries to don't like calling it American Tribal Style, because they are not American. Of course, it is important to note that just because I don't live on the East Coast doesn't mean I change the name East Coast Swing to something else. The name has to do with what it is and where it came from, not who is performing it now.
Let's not confuse it any further by adding yet another name!

Re: ATS AND ITS
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 12:52 PMLife would be easier if the A in ATS didn't mean American - "Oh hey, is that like Indians?" but calling it International Tribal Style is just over-complicated.

Re: ATS AND ITS
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 1:02 PMI first heard ITS as "International Tribal Style" - can't think quite how long ago, but more than a year. You're from South Africa, alison? - I'm fairly sure it was a South African tribe friend who I first heard use the term, so maybe it has strong currency there. I understood it, not as a rejection of the American source of ATS, but as a reflection that a group vocabulary had been extended beyond those roots. As the group I dance with is also not in America, it made sense to me that that made it "International", though of course it doesn't make as much sense to an improv group whose overlaid influences remain American.
More recently (*much* more recently), I've heard it as "Improv Tribal Style". Which also makes sense to me, albeit in a different way, and if that's how people in the community (and my own teacher) are generally promoting it, I'll start generally reading it that way. otoh, if you tell me clearly that your group performs "International Tribal Style" and has been doing so for years, I'll honour that, too. :-) -

Re: ATS AND ITS
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 11:50 PMIm Happy with Improv Tribal Style - I like names that are easily understood. : ) We started a discussion group for South African Tribal dancers and the creator labeled one of the topics ATS - american tribal style ITS international tribal style. Thats why Im asking.

Re: ATS AND ITS
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 3:47 AMI have always understood it as I.T.S. (Improvisational Tribal Style.)
Which is from of A.T.S. (American Tribal Style) only your not useing the the Fat Chance Belly Dance format created by Carolina Nericcio.
I have never heard of International Tribal Style.
I am American I have been living in England for 4 years and now I am at the Azores I still

Re: ATS AND ITS
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 7:15 AMWhile the ATS and ITS designations seem to have been decided along these lines on many Tribe.net groups, I'm not sure it's always used this way in general. I recently read the following and found it interesting: www.blacksheepbellydance.com/cla...html . She adresses her use of the term ATS a ways down the page under the heading "More About the KD/BSBD Format for ATS BD Class Curriculum". Just an FYI. :) -

Re: ATS AND ITS
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 9:38 AMI know it's not always used this way in general, but since Carolena has said that FCBD format is the only one actually allowed to use the term ATS and since she created ATS, I think she has the right to make that distinction. -

Wed, October 28, 2009 - 8:56 AMI see on Carolena's blog she's writing a book, which is great. Am looking forward to it when she gets is out.

Re: ATS AND ITS
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 12:54 PMThe BSBD definition of ATS is a bit of a can of worms which we don't really need to rehash here. If you are interested in learning more about that debate, there are threads on their tribe and elsewhere which discuss this. I don't want to quash any discussion on this topic, but a full rehashing of it would be counter-productive is all.
Suffice to say that Kajira's definition of ATS is her own, and it is my understanding that Carolena is far more interested in dancing and teaching than engaging in policing or debates about what is or isn't ATS. So what is "allowed" and "not allowed" to be called ATS is irrelevant--some people will continue to call non-ATS dancing ATS and there ain't nobody going to knock down their door with the 3am Zill Brigade. :) Carolena is clear that for her, ATS is the FCBD codified style and vocabulary, and those who choose to acknowledge and honor that will do so, and those who don't, won't. And life goes on. :) -
