Hello all:
I teach a tribal class, and today the most upsetting thing happened. A girl, obviously distressed, came up to me and told me she was too fat to bellydance. I tried to assure her that bellydancers are really ALL sizes and bellydancing isn't about being "skinny and pretty" but being a strong, powerful woman comfortable with her body. I don't feel I did a good job. I want to email her some clips of bellydancers that are of varied size on youtube and I was wondering if anyone had any advice or particular things or clips you find inspirational... Any help would be great, my heart was breaking when she was talking to me. I would hate for someone to stop doing something they loved just because of insecurities.
Help :(

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 7:17 PMwell i'm currently watching this video of Benu in Lincoln on youtube -- www.youtube.com/watch
and there are dancers of all sizes in their troupe
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 7:25 PMCheck out inFusion Tribal's videos. I am currently a size 16 and am 5'3
Dulcinea with Gypsy Caravan is also plus sized. She has been a successful professional dancer for years, been featured in all of GC's instructional videos, and is completely gorgeous and talented.
I know how frustrating it can feel. All those commercially skinny and beautiful dancers that tour and produce videos...
I really want to make an instructional video, among other reasons so bigger girls can see that us BBBD (big beautiful bellydancers) can DANCE.
And send her to the BBBD tribe, to comisserate with other BBBD! -

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 7:37 PMThere is/was a lady in Fat Chance by the name of Suzanne, I think, who was a larger lady. You see her on the San Francisco Beledi DVD. Girlfriend can dance and looks smashing! -
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 10:28 PMDUH! And don't forget Wendy from FatChance. She is a lovely dancer, and smart cookie to boot. Really active on the ATS and FC tribes, and here sometimes as well. Definite inspiration of mine, too!

I'll be the first in line for that video of yours!! Go for it! -

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 8:11 PMI know it's not tribal- but maybe it's important to point out the beauty of diverse sizes in all the styles.
A sweet, sweet person, fantastic dancer and all around beautiful woman is Miasia of DC.
www.youtube.com/watch
There are a lot of really positive comments, too.
Dancing comes from your heart. -
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 6:16 AMMiasia is one of the best kept secrets in belly dance. Seriously. This woman will have you eating right out of the palm of her hand within 5 seconds of taking the stage.
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 3:30 PMi just watched that, quite lovely :) i want to send this to some other people i know who are a bit wary about dancing -
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 3:38 PMI know that there are dancers for all sizes in the BlackSheep and Lambs Troups so you might see if some of those are up from Tribalfest 07. I would also like to say that Tribe Benu from Lincoln NE are some of the most amazing dancers I have seen. Their floorwork is fantastic and just so much fun to watch.
I hope you are able to reassure this dancer and kudos to you for caring enough to make this effort for her.

Wed, September 19, 2007 - 8:17 PMThis is one video I found awhile back that I thought was pretty good. It has dancers of all shapes and sizes in it. I hope this helps even if it just alil...I wouldn't want to see or hear someone give up because of them thinking thier too fat when that could never and will never be true! Bellydancing is for all shapes and sizes and everyone is beautiful nomatter their size or weight.!

Wed, September 19, 2007 - 11:52 PMI love this clip of my Hiplash sisters dancing at TaXim: www.youtube.com/watch
It really shows that beautiful dancers come in all shapes and sizes, and they look great together because they're all strong, confident dancers. -

Amazing isolation and controlled snap, and incredibly graceful arms and hands. -

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 8:50 PMMargaret, you picked a good one (and beat me to it in the process, darn it! ~ *smile*). Marjhani *is* a wonderful, graceful, comfortable-with-herself woman. She's definitely inspired *me* to be more comfortable with where I'm at, size-wise, and not worry about what someone else may think.
Megan, let her know there'll always be cruel (and stupid) people who don't like themselves very much and the only way they can feel better about it is to make someone else feel bad. (if someone's making her feel like this... SHAME on them!) She should do what makes HER feel good and, if it's dancing, DO IT! When I started taking BD, I was very nervous, but I knew I *had* to try it. Guess what, you *still* can't get me to show my belly off completely, but I feel SO feminine and good about myself! If she has issues with her stomach size and "showing it off", there are options (other than a choli w/a bib). There are the leotard/unitards that a lot of sites sell that have the mesh center. I have two in black, one long sleeved/legged for when it's cold and one short sleeved/legless for summer. It helps me feel secure (and secured) and allows the teacher to see my middle so she can correct anything I'm not quite getting.

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 6:53 AMHave her check out bigbeautifulbellydancers.tribe.net
There are great photos of fat & simply not-thin dancers, and tons of support, on that tribe.

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 7:04 AMI'd like to point out Lotus Niraja and the NDC. The troupe has a variety of dancers, and they are all fantastic. Makeda used to dance tribal group improv with the troupe I'm in (Kallisti Tribal - all three of us are different sizes!), and she dances both raqs and solo tribal fusion with the NDC (and Lotus has a background in tribal, we really want to see pictures!).
www.thendc.net/NDCHome.html -
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 9:22 AMThanks for mentioning us! It is awesome to be a part of The NDC because we all understand that being a dancer has little to do with one's size. We run the gamut.
And Kallisti Tribal is a great representation that womanhood in all our shapes and sizes can be beautiful and powerful.

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 7:53 PMI want to put a word in with those who mentioned Hiba and Elinor. I had actually dropped Elinor a line asking if she had video up so I could direct people to see her (she doesn't yet.)
She danced at Tribally Yours in Montreal last February and did the most hypnotic fan dance I'd seen in a long time. And the woman moves like melting butter on hot corn... smooth and fluid.
Hiba is just so powerful to watch. She takes the stage and can be serious or playful, but always polished in her technique.
Props to both these ladies. -

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 7:59 PMOhhh, I found my good SCA cousin, Bambi.
Bamps is a BBBBD (I added black in as a B! ;-)))) and her smile as she dances makes you want to smile as well. And she does it all. North African, Tribal, Cabaret... Nothing stops her and she's good at it all.
Here is her troupe: Hips Accepted.

Fri, September 21, 2007 - 1:21 PMThanks Valizan!
The bummer is there was supposed to be a videographer at the last show I danced in, "Cabaret Serpentine," and he bailed at the last minute, so no YouTube clips for me! I actually just have to figure out how to rip stuff off a DVD and turn it into something for YouTube.

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 3:23 PMThat is terrible and the lady must be distressed for sure, my advice would be to maybe show her this thread. I've just been reading down through the posts, and literally one after another everyone is recommending stuff right of the batt. So it proves its not uncommon or unheard of at all, but the way all dancers of shapes and sizes should be and thats appreciated! Good luck, hope it works out!

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 4:43 PMShe should check out the picture of "Anthurium Dark Fusion" by 'Loyd Thrap' here on tribe. They are a dark tribal group out of El Paso 2 of the dancers are excellent examples of BBBD's. -

Thu, September 20, 2007 - 8:15 PMNot sure if there is any YouTube video of Obsidia of TX but she was the first dancer that did goth tribal that I liked...not just liked, I had tears streaming down my face when I watched her dance. ah, here I found a piece www.youtube.com/watch The flowy stuff is nice but her sharp stuff blows me away
And our dancer Majida is incredible and not a skinny Minnie. We all feel like little girls playing at bellydance next to her www.youtube.com/watch -
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 11:08 PMI will agree that Majida is an awesome dancer. I've seen her at TribeO 1 and 2, and was amazed by her grace and her SHIMMIES! Wow! -

Fri, September 21, 2007 - 12:20 AMAngelia- I was going to post Nisha's footage too!
I don't really have anyone that hasn't already been suggested....
But as a BBBD, I hope she finds some peace with her own self....fat is NOT a dirty word. If she ever ends up on tribe- feel free to give her my profile thingy- I'd love to offer her some support...and you have to send her to the BBBD tribe!! There's an AMAZING group over there...
I have a practice video on my profile....its just a practice, but she can have a look if she'd like. -

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Sat, September 22, 2007 - 12:28 AMI love the word fat.
Its always funny when someone says "but your fat" um... yah... like I didnt know that I have 100 extra pounds on my frame??? WOW! *slaps forhead* thanks for letting me know! AHAHAAHAH
I love your practice video Amara!
one day... I will have one online... =) -

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 9:34 PMI have to agree with you Angel. There is nothing wrong with the word fat. I am fat! Like you said people look at us and say your a belly dancer? Yes I am. But, your fat!. Holy pork rinds BatMan! I didnt know that!
Like my son says, " Thank you for the clear observation Captian Obvious!" -
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 10:24 PMMy favourite thing to say to people who go 'You're fat' or make fat jokes is this:
'Well at least we know your eyes work....its just your mouth thats dysfunctional'. Or:
'Thankyou for stating the obvious'.... Or:
'You know something though? I can go on a diet- it'll cost you thousands to get your face fixed!!!'
I once had a child of about 8-9 in front of his mum say to me 'You're ssssooo fat- you must eat heaps of food'!!!! I go....'You're SSSSSOOOO ugly...you're mum must have dropped you on your face when you were a baby'......he didn't like that much....don't suspect his mother did either....little brat. I bet he never said anything smart to a fat person again!
Why do people think its acceptable to say things like that to people just because they're fat? I think we should have a mission statement:
I am fat, proud, and I WILL BE SEEN AND HEARD. You cannot ignore me any longer...if I make you uncomfortable, deal with it....but I am a person, real flesh and blood, and I have feelings just like you do- so back off or be prepared.
GGRRRR! *grin* -

Fri, September 21, 2007 - 5:35 AMI think my little sister Emily is the best dancer in the world.
here's a video of us dancing her tribaret choreography:

She is so smooth and fluid and she never overdoes her moves (like I do). -

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 10:53 AMMeliza Wells has always been an inspiration to me. She used to be in Romani back in the day, and now dances with a group called Lapsus.
She is hot. And sweet. Mmm, like a sticky bun!

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 11:46 AMI love Meliza too! She's a fabulous dancer and choreographer. And as much as I'd like to take credit for her ;-), Meliza was never in Romani--she was in a group called Lotus and then Bastet.
Thanks to Cindy for the shoutout! You can see some old-school footage of me and Sue in our old troupe Romani here:

Re: lovely curvaceous dancers, I have to mention Monika of Red Lotus and Amy in FCBD (in addition to the gorgeous Wendy, who's already been mentioned). And of course Amy in my own troupe Clandestine--in my troupe we have sizes 6 to 18 and it doesn't matter a bit to us. :-)

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Mon, September 24, 2007 - 11:37 AMHi Megan,
Another thing that might help is to show her more costuming options rather than just bare belly. Since I came to tribal dance from the SCA (where at least the people there that I danced with seldom showed much skin), I personally am uncomfortable with showing that much skin.
I currently wear a mesh tank that goes to low on my hips (I tied my belt over it).
Our dance school has a compliment policy thought up by our assistance Director. If you say something negative about yourself, you are required to immediately come up with a compliment about yourself. I think it really helps break the negative thinking train up.
If the music moves her, she should dance like no one is watching! -
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Tue, September 25, 2007 - 6:49 AMOooo I like that compliment policy!
I will have to use that!
You all will love yourselves, damn it!
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Tue, September 25, 2007 - 6:55 AMAlso, just a thought...
I think that people should wear what they are comfortable in, and many heavier dancers might feel more comfortable in a costume that covers them up.
However, I also really love seeing bigger dancers dressed just like everyone else, bare stomach and all. For me, at least, showing my stomach in performances has made me more comfortable with what I look like and has helped me get over the negative vibes from a society that wants all women to emaciate themselves. I want to show the love to dancers of all sizes so that they can feel this way too. -
-
Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Thu, September 27, 2007 - 1:23 AMFor me, personally ~ I'm in my 40's and I tend to feel a bit more comfortable with layers, depending on the day. I also have my belly button pierced and so tend to use scarves to cover that at my restaurant. I agree, Sara, that we should be able to wear what pleases us and keeps us comfortable while we dance...

Mon, September 24, 2007 - 5:43 AMHey Megan! As one of the local big girls around here I thought I'd post this link (that I didn't even know was there... came across it by accident). It's me at Folk Tours Band Camp in PA last year. If your student wants to see me in action she can keep tabs on me at either my website or my friends.' I'd love to meet her and maybe offer a bit of inspiration if I can. We have some local shows coming up too.
Here's the YouTube link.... www.youtube.com/paparaksi

Mon, September 24, 2007 - 1:30 PMChristina of Blue Lotus already beat me to the punch, she's a phenomenal dancer who wowed me at Folk tours last year (and was a great cabin-mate too)!

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Mon, September 24, 2007 - 4:53 PMThis may or may not help. It's an interview of Rachel Brice talking about how one of the most beautiful dancers she'd ever seen was about 250-300 lbs.

Annoyingly, the interview has been intercut with shots of Rachel dancing, so the flow is broken up a bit. -

Re: Inspirational Bigger Dancers
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 4:55 AMThere are larger dancers in Blue Caravan, PURE, Black V Tribal, Troupe Zahara... and my lovely lady started tribal just last night. You've nailed the description perfectly.
