Inspirational Bigger Dancers

Hello all:

I teach a tribal class, and today the most upsetting thing happened. A girl, obviously distressed, came up to me and told me she was too fat to bellydance. I tried to assure her that bellydancers are really ALL sizes and bellydancing isn't about being "skinny and pretty" but being a strong, powerful woman comfortable with her body. I don't feel I did a good job. I want to email her some clips of bellydancers that are of varied size on youtube and I was wondering if anyone had any advice or particular things or clips you find inspirational... Any help would be great, my heart was breaking when she was talking to me. I would hate for someone to stop doing something they loved just because of insecurities.

Help :(

Check out inFusion Tribal's videos. I am currently a size 16 and am 5'3

Dulcinea with Gypsy Caravan is also plus sized. She has been a successful professional dancer for years, been featured in all of GC's instructional videos, and is completely gorgeous and talented.

I know how frustrating it can feel. All those commercially skinny and beautiful dancers that tour and produce videos...

I really want to make an instructional video, among other reasons so bigger girls can see that us BBBD (big beautiful bellydancers) can DANCE.

And send her to the BBBD tribe, to comisserate with other BBBD!

There is/was a lady in Fat Chance by the name of Suzanne, I think, who was a larger lady. You see her on the San Francisco Beledi DVD. Girlfriend can dance and looks smashing!

DUH! And don't forget Wendy from FatChance. She is a lovely dancer, and smart cookie to boot. Really active on the ATS and FC tribes, and here sometimes as well. Definite inspiration of mine, too!

This is one video I found awhile back that I thought was pretty good. It has dancers of all shapes and sizes in it. I hope this helps even if it just alil...I wouldn't want to see or hear someone give up because of them thinking thier too fat when that could never and will never be true! Bellydancing is for all shapes and sizes and everyone is beautiful nomatter their size or weight.!

Here's Marjhani, the first Tribal dancer I saw perform live:

(more Gothish or Industrial, same dancer)

Amazing isolation and controlled snap, and incredibly graceful arms and hands.

Margaret, you picked a good one (and beat me to it in the process, darn it! ~ *smile*). Marjhani *is* a wonderful, graceful, comfortable-with-herself woman. She's definitely inspired *me* to be more comfortable with where I'm at, size-wise, and not worry about what someone else may think.
Megan, let her know there'll always be cruel (and stupid) people who don't like themselves very much and the only way they can feel better about it is to make someone else feel bad. (if someone's making her feel like this... SHAME on them!) She should do what makes HER feel good and, if it's dancing, DO IT! When I started taking BD, I was very nervous, but I knew I *had* to try it. Guess what, you *still* can't get me to show my belly off completely, but I feel SO feminine and good about myself! If she has issues with her stomach size and "showing it off", there are options (other than a choli w/a bib). There are the leotard/unitards that a lot of sites sell that have the mesh center. I have two in black, one long sleeved/legged for when it's cold and one short sleeved/legless for summer. It helps me feel secure (and secured) and allows the teacher to see my middle so she can correct anything I'm not quite getting.

I'd like to point out Lotus Niraja and the NDC. The troupe has a variety of dancers, and they are all fantastic. Makeda used to dance tribal group improv with the troupe I'm in (Kallisti Tribal - all three of us are different sizes!), and she dances both raqs and solo tribal fusion with the NDC (and Lotus has a background in tribal, we really want to see pictures!).

Thanks for mentioning us! It is awesome to be a part of The NDC because we all understand that being a dancer has little to do with one's size. We run the gamut.

And Kallisti Tribal is a great representation that womanhood in all our shapes and sizes can be beautiful and powerful.

That is terrible and the lady must be distressed for sure, my advice would be to maybe show her this thread. I've just been reading down through the posts, and literally one after another everyone is recommending stuff right of the batt. So it proves its not uncommon or unheard of at all, but the way all dancers of shapes and sizes should be and thats appreciated! Good luck, hope it works out!

Angelia- I was going to post Nisha's footage too!

I don't really have anyone that hasn't already been suggested....

But as a BBBD, I hope she finds some peace with her own self....fat is NOT a dirty word. If she ever ends up on tribe- feel free to give her my profile thingy- I'd love to offer her some support...and you have to send her to the BBBD tribe!! There's an AMAZING group over there...

I have a practice video on my profile....its just a practice, but she can have a look if she'd like.

Like my son says, " Thank you for the clear observation Captian Obvious!"

My favourite thing to say to people who go 'You're fat' or make fat jokes is this:

'Well at least we know your eyes work....its just your mouth thats dysfunctional'. Or:
'Thankyou for stating the obvious'.... Or:
'You know something though? I can go on a diet- it'll cost you thousands to get your face fixed!!!'

I once had a child of about 8-9 in front of his mum say to me 'You're ssssooo fat- you must eat heaps of food'!!!! I go....'You're SSSSSOOOO ugly...you're mum must have dropped you on your face when you were a baby'......he didn't like that much....don't suspect his mother did either....little brat. I bet he never said anything smart to a fat person again!

Why do people think its acceptable to say things like that to people just because they're fat? I think we should have a mission statement:
I am fat, proud, and I WILL BE SEEN AND HEARD. You cannot ignore me any longer...if I make you uncomfortable, deal with it....but I am a person, real flesh and blood, and I have feelings just like you do- so back off or be prepared.
              GGRRRR! *grin*

Megan, you should have your student go to this link! Maybe it will give her a boost! I know it gave me one (and I'm already comfortable "in the skin I'm in!"

Stacy, let her know for me, she has a new fan!!

      Hi Megan,

Another thing that might help is to show her more costuming options rather than just bare belly. Since I came to tribal dance from the SCA (where at least the people there that I danced with seldom showed much skin), I personally am uncomfortable with showing that much skin.

I currently wear a mesh tank that goes to low on my hips (I tied my belt over it).

Our dance school has a compliment policy thought up by our assistance Director. If you say something negative about yourself, you are required to immediately come up with a compliment about yourself. I think it really helps break the negative thinking train up.

If the music moves her, she should dance like no one is watching!

        Also, just a thought...
I think that people should wear what they are comfortable in, and many heavier dancers might feel more comfortable in a costume that covers them up.
However, I also really love seeing bigger dancers dressed just like everyone else, bare stomach and all. For me, at least, showing my stomach in performances has made me more comfortable with what I look like and has helped me get over the negative vibes from a society that wants all women to emaciate themselves. I want to show the love to dancers of all sizes so that they can feel this way too.

For me, personally ~ I'm in my 40's and I tend to feel a bit more comfortable with layers, depending on the day. I also have my belly button pierced and so tend to use scarves to cover that at my restaurant. I agree, Sara, that we should be able to wear what pleases us and keeps us comfortable while we dance...

This may or may not help. It's an interview of Rachel Brice talking about how one of the most beautiful dancers she'd ever seen was about 250-300 lbs.

    www.youtube.com/watch

Annoyingly, the interview has been intercut with shots of Rachel dancing, so the flow is broken up a bit.
