How far does tribal span? It seems like you can pretty much just find it here in the US... I'm going to be in S. America for a while and would love if I could come across it, but probably not ;( The only belly dance I saw was cabaret-based... what do you think?

Tue, August 14, 2007 - 6:17 AMYup. Here's a link list of tribal troupes in Germany: www.aragira.de/links.htm - it's not complete (I know of some troupes that aren't on it), but it's the biggest one I know of.

Tue, August 7, 2007 - 11:39 AMWhere in South America? Maybe we can help network you! Even in places where there may not be classes or troupes, there could be passionate enthusiasts who would love to meet with you and share info between you!

Tue, August 7, 2007 - 1:45 PMMany teachers have taught workshops in many countries. I think the question is where is it living and growing actively, and can refer people to as teachers and resources around the globe? -

Re: tribal across the globe
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 6:48 AMThere is tribal in Buenos Aires, and some budding groups in Colombia and Bolivia...I belong to a yahoo group called "tribalbogota" where all these gals hang. They are all new, but they're doing it.
I had a great moment the other day--Iman from BsAs posted a youtube of her crew, and I saw a move not common to all tribes, but one that I do--come to find out, that
--I learned it from Troupe Salamat
--I taught it to Sharon in Cuernavaca
--She taught it to Mirna in Buenos Aires
--Who taught it to Iman in Buenos Aires!
Tribal geneological tree! Fun!

Re: tribal across the globe
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 3:35 PMYou can find some tribal in South America. Where are you going to exactly?
We have a tribe called "Danza del vientre tribal", it was created to talk about tribal... but in Spanish. You will find there some dancers from South America (of course you can also write in English in case you don't speak Spanish)

Re: tribal across the globe
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 5:55 PM...because there was a mention of Japan...I only know Tokyo, so here goes (peeps with websites only)
www.mishaal.com Mishaal (sooo amazing, such a force) has studied with so many and brings a lot of dancers (tribal and other styles to Japan) next is Sharon Kihara in October, RB&ML came in spring, so did Elijah Sound, and others. She has her own tribal troupe. She's American. She's on tribe.
sarashukra.main.jp/ Misato has studied with FCBD extensively. She follows their format. She lived 2 years ago in the states for 9 months or more just studying with them. Beautiful, beautiful dancer. She has her own troupe too. She speaks fluent English. She's on Tribe too.
emem.ninja-x.jp/ Milla & Echan have taught at Spirit of the Tribes. They've just released a DVD. They do Tribal Fusion and have recently been fusing a Japanese element really beautifully. They are awesome. They speak a bit of English and are super friendly.
e-chan-belly.jugem.jp/ Echan's solo stuff
www.raksmiho.com/ Miho does romani style with a bit of tribal mixed in (that's what I would call it anyways). I love her hands and arms.
www.quricala.com/safi/ Safi performs at a lot of tribal events. I would call her style more dark cabaret, but that's just my opinion.
www.judwa.net/ Judwa is a fire and tribal duo.
hippyshake.com/link/link01.html More links here if you are really into the japanese scene. (but all in Japanese)

Re: tribal across the globe
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 9:54 PMIf you are going to Argentina, check out the Ballet Rakassah... If I'm not wrong you can contact them thru Saida's school (I know, she's modern egyptian style), and I'm pretty sure they teach Tribal as well (more like a Tribal Fusion type of Tribal). Or so it looks like on their youtube promo clip! Other than that I have no idea. I know Tribal is big in Europe as many have said, and goes as far as Australia....but in South America my bet would be in Argentina, since Saida is more in contact with the American styles, well she is a BDSS.....

Re: tribal across the globe
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 12:18 AMwell I'm from South Africa...and generally we stay in the parameters of cabaret style...tribal is not found in many groups in the country... I know of one in Capetown. But my studio Bellyfusion in Kwa zulu Natal has started doing some tribal fusion this year...and its so exciting to be doing something different... making tribal outfits for end of year as well...TRIBE has been such an inspiring and helpful place! I know you're not coming here...but I thought I would just tell ya that a few groups in SA are doing it too:) -

Re: tribal across the globe
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 8:52 AMHere in Brazil we´re doing it as well! Tribal is growing really fast. I think there´s no way to see it and be indifferent and most of the girls are fascinated by it. We are in our first moves here in Rio, starting a group and having lessons. Come visit us if you pass by! =)

Re: tribal across the globe
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 10:23 AMHere in Sweden we seem to have one troupe and they are the only ones teaching tribal style (Tribal Empire). Tribal is pretty unknown here. I stumbled across it when studying gothic dancers who have their bases in tribal style. Please send us some teachers. ;D Here we mostly do the cabaret style, still. I'm the strange bird with my fusion styles. I'd LOVE to add more tribal into it, it's so powerful. -

Wed, August 8, 2007 - 8:27 PMThis is a great post! Does anyone know how to create the wikimaps or google maps that have locations everyone can pinpoint? I bet it'd be a great reference to have everyone on it across the globe! -
