what tools/tips do you guys use to keep choreo straight in your head? i was thinking about getting a tiny notebook and sewing a little pocket on the inside of one of my hipscarves so that i could make quick notes, but i dont want to hold everyone else up while i'm scribbling =p

Re: sooo i'm learning my first choreography
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 10:08 PMNotes are good but you are right...it's hard to scribble in class. I may take time right afterward. And I carry a BIG notebook. The other thing is coming up with your own dance notation shorthand. So you can refer to it months later if need be! Hope this helps and good luck!!

Re: sooo i'm learning my first choreography
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 11:56 PMOur teacher has it all on paper and hands out copies. I have to decipher her shorthand, but it's better than trying to write it down or memorize. Of course after lots of practice you won't need it anymore!

Re: sooo i'm learning my first choreography
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 7:19 AMAsk your teacher if she has it in written format, she might be willing to provide it that way.
I find the best way to memorize choreography is to think it through, visualize it in your mind, the whole thing including the transitions. Then the written can be used to help you through the parts you get stuck on.
BTW- memorizing choreography gets easier the more you do it. -

Re: sooo i'm learning my first choreography
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 8:08 AMWhen we were just learning our first choreography our teacher wrote it all out and then gave us printouts. It was REALLY helpful. I stuck it to my refrigerator so when i was practicing and I got lost I could just go and check it!

Wed, May 14, 2008 - 6:12 PMAlso ask the girl who took notes if she was willing to share or compare, also a great way to get a practice partner. -

Re: sooo i'm learning my first choreography
Sat, May 24, 2008 - 3:29 PMMake sure to get the music you are using for the choreography. I find that replaying that music on the way to work or at home, I can practice what my mind remembers.
I do wish we had a list of steps so I could remember those turns but the music playing is like a trigger in my head. -

Re: sooo i'm learning my first choreography
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 9:02 PMThis is the best way for me to learn choreos. I'm pretty good at remembering moves and combos, but lousy at recalling the order, so listening to the order and going through the motions in my head is the best thing for getting it into my bones. Having a step-sheet helps when you forget (especially if you write it out yourself, though usually I'm too lazy to do that), but ideally you want to wean yourself off it; it's like your study notes for a test. Running through in my head at bedtime or while walking (listening to music) is better for me than while driving... driving still takes up too much of my attention.

Re: sooo i'm learning my first choreography
Wed, May 28, 2008 - 11:16 AMI first started learning complex choreography in Irish step dancing classes. I found that the only way to make it stick at all was to write it out, step by step. Then I would memorize it. Then I would read it over and over while listening to the music and eventually the words "stuck" to the piece of music. -

Re: sooo i'm learning my first choreography
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 8:40 AMI'm not really one for memorizing through writing out moves. I'm a visual person, so I just need to drill the steps over and over again until my muscles memorize it.
So the advice I can give is just to practice it a lot. Even just Marking it (doing the moves half-way to the beat of the music) is helpful.
