Hi! I've been studying tribal belly dance for a while and one of this days a saw an ad which was promoting a Show of bellydancers, but not tribal, they where performing cabaret and egyptian. And their name was "XXXX Troupe", so i got a bit confused 'cause i thought that "Troupes" where just tribal dancers.
Could anyone explain me a little about the correct use of this word??

Thanks!

  • Technically, a troupe is a group of performers.
"a company, band, or group of singers, actors, or other performers, esp. one that travels about."

I've heard the word Company used as well, interchangably with troupe sometimes. There seems to be a it of a crow-bar seperation between the two.

The only "grouping" work I've heard that relates only to tribal bellydance is "tribe," as in "What tribe do you belong to?" But I don't like the word, since I'm not in a tribe actually - in my brain that indicates something totally different: family and cultural bonds in a small community.
