PayPal

topic posted Tue, April 15, 2008 - 8:58 AM by  Rya
I just wanted to let everyone know who frequently uses PayPal that I just got off the phone with them and they're apparently having some issues. Even though I had a significant balance on my paypal account, they took the money out of my bank account. Apparenlty, this is happening a lot and I just wanted to make everyone aware.

I will be x-posting this so hopefully no one else gets screwed like me.

Wow! That sucks! I hope it gets straightened out for you. There has to be some kind of record of your activity. Even if you don't have a copy of it, you should be able to force them to give you one.

Thanks for the heads up. Good luck!

I made a mad dash to the bank today to cover my payment so it's all worked out now. I was just pissed because when I asked the lady at PayPal about the fees I would get from my bank because of their error, she told me that I'd have to call back and maybe they could do something about it. A little heads up that they were having issues would have been nice.

I think they may be having a bunch of problems. I tried to sign up, and they told me my address doesn't exist.

Yep, I had students trying to pay today and said they kept being taken to the wrong pages/items.

Oh no! Paypal is my only way to buy things out of my country! Hope they're going to fix the problems very soon and that they will refund you the money you lost because of them!

Thanks for info. I heard someone telling that Google Check out is cheaper for the one receiving the money, and I've never heard anyone having problems with that. Has anyone heard anything more about Google checkout?

Not a thing. I am curious.
Paypal is so widespread now. It's the convenience factor, y'know? If people don't have to sign up in ANOTHER place, they are more likely to buy.

Recently when I go to make a payment, Paypal automatically sets up to "pay from my bank account", even tho I have a good Paypal balance too.

I nearly did not notice it the first time it happened.

So now, every time I buy something, there are extra steps that I have to do to change the payment from my bank account to my Paypal balance.

When you go to "Review Payment Details", you need to need to click on "More Funding Options" and then select "Paypal Balance". And then it works fine.

    I hope that helps,

I tried that and I didn't get the option. I thought that was weird which is why I watched my account so closely until my online bank statement confirmed that it was definately coming out of my checking account.

Paypal is really shady. I know of a lot of people who have been burned by Paypal arbitrarily reversing charges and such like; as for myself I had my account summarily suspended for no reason and wasn't able to get it reinstated for *2 years*.

They're not subject to regular banking laws so they can effectively do whatever they want, unfortunately. It really sucks that they've become the standard such that many vendors only accept Paypal.

Strange. I have been with Paypal since 2000 (8 years?! WOAH!) and never had one significant issue.
What happened in your case? Anything avoidable?

I also had that happened, you just reminded me of it. I was working for an ebay store a bit more than a year ago, and my mother sent me $200 spending money through paypal for a huge event. When me and aforementioned employer came back, paypal had sent all the money back to my mom's account! So I owed this person $200.

I actually had something weird happen with paypal, I made a payment for a dvd and never received it, I wondered, and then got a notice from paypal telling me that the payment was denied because the email addy was not registered, I know it is because I have ordered from her before. I tried again, same thing. I am sure she lost many sales due to that, I for one, was ordering stuff and had it cancelled, I am sure it wasn't an isolated incident judging from what I am reading here.

I had a similar incident with my address.
I was checking out for a purchase and happened to notice that
it had a VERY old address as my primary shipping address.
Luckily I changed it before a finished it and haven't had any problems
            getting my merch.

            very strange......

I think PayPal is like anything else, you have to track it, because mistakes happen.
I suspect that with so many users, that they have to do data backups and move data around different servers to keep up with the
loads. When mistakes happen, they probably have to reload data from prior backups, so its always good to keep your data up to date as much as possible.

Also, they allow you to transfer funds from Paypal to your bank account for free. I recommend doing this often and keeping a minimal balance, this might lessen mishaps with missing money. Also, by doing this, your bank keeps track of the transfers too, so you have two records, instead of one.

Paypal isn't perfect, but it sure is convenient.

I never ask perfection of a company. But I do ask them to make things right. And their "whatever, your problem now" attitude to their mistake really just pissed me off.
