I'm (hopefully) putting together a bellydance festival for 2009 (it's our 3rd annual - Northern Lights in Wisconsin), and am needing to book some Tribal instructors. Who is your favorite workshop instructor?

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 10:59 AMHonestly, I would have to say Unmata. Their workshop was great and made it a lot of fun. Lots of high energy. :) Amy was fantastic and very enjoyable to learn from. -

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 11:15 AMI've taken lots of workshops from lots of dancers and I've learned a tremendous amount from most. Some were super fun, but I learned little. A few were really awful--not because of the teacher necessarily (although she should be able to control it), but because of students who'd rather talk than dance (you've been to these too, I'm sure).
If asked which workshops I've been to that were superfun, hard, and educational, at which the teacher was in control but not overly authoritatively so, then....I gotta nominate
our lovely moderator, Sharon Moore
Urban Gypsy
I admire and attempt to emulate these teachers when I teach workshops, which are far harder than teaching a class. FIrst, I'm nervous. Second, I'm nervous. and Third, well...you get the idea. It's a challenge to put yourself out there. Kudos and many pranams to those teachers who do it so effortlessly, gracefully.
much love to all,
ali

Wed, February 18, 2009 - 8:33 AMJust so everyone's aware, Urban Gypsy will "be in the area" in July. We're hosting them in Minneapolis mid-July '09 - in case that helps with your decision. :)

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 11:48 AMI second the Jill Parker vote. She came to Florida in October and she'll easily go down as one of my favorite instructors.
Other people who's teaching methods really inspire me are: Ariellah, Sharon Kihara and Amy Sigil. -
-
Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 12:25 PMOh gosh, Ariellah is great also...
I also have to say that I LOVE John Compton. I've only taken one workshop from him but I got a ton of great material out of it.

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 2:04 PMCera of Damage Control Dance Theatre. She is incredibly inspiring and pushes creative ideas WAY outside of the box. I'm still inspired by the exercises and words she gave in a workshop last summer. AWESOME! -

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 3:26 PMBlue Lotus Tribe of Chicago rocks some sword. They actually have several different interesting and unusual workshops . . . one for 6/8, another for skirt work, and I think there's even one that's an introduction to tribal for non-tribal dancers. They are very popular in the Midwest area, and for good reason.

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 5:26 PMMoria! She's awesome, such a vibrant person with so much to teach, and the time span you give her, she certainly teaches loads of stuff! -

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 8:28 PMOf those who I have had the honor of taking a workshop with, the one who tops my list is Sharon Kihara. Not only is she a brilliant performer but a highly gifted instructor in too many facets to mention which is a very rare gift. I am always hesitant to take workshops with seasoned pros of her caliber because the distance from their abilities to an intermediate attendee is too far to relate at times but she bridged it well and with grace and patience.
Funnest workshop I have ever been to was Unmata. Loved the unorthodox approach but that is exactly what makes these ladies so damn special and sets them apart from everyone else. They are just amazing! -

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 8:36 PMWow, in the 3 years that I have been taking workshops there have been so many wonderful instructors. Some of my absolute favs are:
Sharon Kihara
Zoe
John Compton
Urban Gypsy
Kajira
Paulette of Gypsy Caravan
Unmata
I have not been able to take any sword workshops yet, but both Sabine of Tribulation and Romka come very highly recommended.

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 4:29 PMKami Liddle - A wonderful teacher that keeps you smiling, motivated, and excited the whole time. I learn so much while having fun and I am able to take so much home with me. I also admire how open she is to questions from students, but yet, stays right on track with her class. Very inspiring.
Mardi Love, Rachel Brice, and Zoe are also *fabulous*. They all offer something unique and very special not to be missed! -
-
Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 8:33 PMAnother vote for Paulette Rees-Denis of Gypsy Caravan, especially her Trance workshop - 2 hours of moving to various beats that really unlock your head from being a dancer and just move! We did this one last year and some participants were moved to tears, its hard to describe but its just one of those great workshops to do!
Sword - Sabine from Tribalation is so inspiring as is Belladonna from Romka....both have been mentioned here before.

Mon, September 14, 2009 - 12:17 PMDefinitely Mira Betz but also girls from Zafira.
Also, this woman is not tribal, but the level of isolation and the quality of ther technique - she might as well be - Ava Fleming. She's *the* best. and she takes your breath away when she dances.

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 3:22 PMI recently took a couple workshops with Sabrina Fox of Atash Maya (San Diego). I was impressed. Good workout, some fun new moves and drill ideas, and she got a sly sense of humor.

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Thu, February 5, 2009 - 9:58 AMI really enjoy Sashi from Ascend Tribal even though I'm not goth, but she is super fun ans clear and super down to earth. Also, my favorite of all...(sorry Sashi...hearts) Lacey from Florida Tribal Dance. She has the energy of an army, she is super funny and warm.

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Fri, February 6, 2009 - 4:40 PMOkay, maybe this is WAY obvious and that's why no one has mentioned her, but Carolena Nericcio teaches an awsome workshop and, of course, if you're talking about Tribal, best to go to the source.
Donna Mejía - fabulous!
Mardi Love - delicious! -

Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 3:31 PMI am astounded Asharah has not been mentioned yet! Mind-blowing technique, interesting workshop concepts, and best of all, the nicest and most down-to-Earth girl you will meet.
Moria, Kami, Zoe, and Rachel rock too... to be honest, though, I haven't been to a tribal workshop I haven't loved, so I might be a crappy person to ask.
Can I put in a vote for Sera Solstice from New York? I don't know if she travels nor have I ever taken from her, but watching her dance is enough to push to bring her to the Midwest! -
-
Re: Favorite Workshop Instructors?
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 3:32 PMWhoops, someone already did mention Asharah, and I second Samantha Hasthorpe as well!
