omi vs interior hip circle

Is there a difference? I was working with a new dvd I got (Ashera) and she teaches an interior hip circle. It looks similar to an omi/umi. Is it the same thing just different lingo?

In most cases, it is the same move just different terms.

That said, know that in Tahitian/Polynesian dance, the omi is generated by the knees. Because you get more speed for the move you may recognize as "that hula thing" if your hips are loose and the knees are pumping. but know in most modern bellydance, the move is intentionally created by the torso muscles, and NOT the knees.

    Just a little FYI!

For belly dance purposes, I'd have to say yes. Asharah uses the Suhaila Salimpour method which doesn't use the word omi, but it's the same thing as what people talk about when they say omi in belly dance. I have heard Asharah distinguish between an interior hip circle & a real Polynesian omi, which she said (I believe) has more emphasis on the back part but for belly dance purposes, I'd say it's the same thing.

I'd agree as far as bellydance goes - when people say ami/omi or interior circle, they usually mean the same thing (though sometimes people also equate "interior" to "small" hip circle, which isn't the same).

The movements are a little different in various Polynesian styles, though - Tahitian dance's ohuri has more rear action than the hula ami, for instance, and both have more swing when done in their own dance forms than the way we commonly use them in bellydance.
