Hi all,
I've got a question that I hope you lovely ladies can help me with. I'm looking on starting to learn sword dance at a workshop series that stars in about a month from now and I've been trying to look for a good sword for a beginner that won't break my bank account. (While I don't want to spend too much I would like to make sure that the purchase I end up making is a worthwhile investment.)
So far this is seems to be the best deal I've come across, bellydancestore.biz/gallery.php
I've been hesitant to buy it since I won't be able to return it. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Than you all so much in advance,
Isa

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Wed, June 24, 2009 - 6:13 PMI have the Kult of Athena Baladay. www.kultofathena.com/product...itar.htm
It is a positively awesome sword and balances quite well. I just looked and it is apparently on back order at the moment, but it is definitely worth the fourty-five bucks. It is the second sword I have owned and the first one did not balance too well. I had to wear a headband and put sticky stuff on it to make it work. It works for others, just not me.
So...I would definitely recommend the Baladay. I have heard nothing but positive reviews from other people about it. I would also suggest trying one out before you purchase it, especially if you are getting it online. I do not know anything specifically about the sword you listed. Sorry. -

Wed, June 24, 2009 - 6:23 PMThat looks really nice. I'll have to inquire about when it may be back in stock.
Thanks. ^^

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 9:30 PMI third Kult of Athena's Baladay sword. Love the sword and their service and shipping were fantastic. Several of the ladies in our troupe have this sword and it seems to work really well. -

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 9:28 AMi have a kult of athena balady that i love too. it came very quickly, and i like that it has a hard cover that came with it. i was not allowed the return option, because i bought it the week before halloween, heh, heh! i guess people must have been getting them for costuming and returning them. :o but they are returnable other times -

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 10:08 AMI love my Kult of Athena balady also. I agree with Cindy--it came within days, and the cover is pretty decent for the price. The sword itself looks more expensive than it is, IMO. I'm just a beginner with a sword, but I haven't had too much difficulty getting used to it.
Like now, it was on backorder also when I originally wanted one, but it didn't take too long to see them come back in stock. Maybe a month or so. -

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 10:28 AMYeah, I heard back from them at the end of last week and said the sword would be in with in the next two weeks. I'm going to put in an order for it soon so I can get it as soon as it comes in. (Cause with my luck it'll be sold out again before I remember to get it :P)

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Wed, June 24, 2009 - 7:50 PMI love all my swords for different reasons.
If you are dancing up close to audiences a lot and want something that will not harm anyone should it fall, nothing beats the Saroyan. It looks great, has lots of etched images and such that up-close patrons will appreciate, and the fact that there is nary a sharp point on it makes it an excellent choice. I also recommend this for brand-new-to-sword dancers because it is not too heavy, well balanced, and comes pre-notched on the balance point.
dwp.bigplanet.com/saroyan/scimitars/
For a budget, I recommend the "jaguar"! I don't know what it is actually called, but we always call the little animal a jaguar. It is less flashy, but still well balanced and looks sharp though only the point is--you will poke a hole in your foot with this one if it hits tip-down, but the rest of it is dulled. It's a bit heavier, and best of all it comes with a hard sheath! This not only protects your sword, but can be used to dance with as well (the dramatic unsheathing is fun in performance). The sword is a good length for all length arms. And my favorite vendor is out of them now, so I can't show you where to get one.
The final one is the Cas Iberia Balady, which my troupe is using right now. I am not keen on the awkward leather sheath with snaps, but the sword itself is solid and well made. I like that there is no hand guard on the pommel, which makes it easier to move around as needed while dancing. The tip is very sharp, so beeee carefuuul when dancing around fellow dancers and audience members. The balance point is further back on the blade than I would like, and the sword is on the short side (long armed dancers be aware), but it is an impressive look and a great price. Since they are backordered at Kult of Athena, try here www.bellydanceprops.com/scimitars.php -

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 4:34 AMThanks for the well thought out reviews. :)
The Saroyan is a bit out of my price range at the moment, but it does look very nice. I'll remember about the sharp point on the Balady, maybe I can find someone who would be able to dull it down for me.

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Wed, June 24, 2009 - 8:33 PMI would not buy a sword sight unseen from a merchant who does not allow returns because other customers who bought the same sword had been unhappy with it. Many merchants will make you pay the return postage and a re-stocking fee, but outright refusing to accept returns if the customer is dissatisfied does not reflect good customer service. I also am somewhat suspicious of the merchant's claim that the sword is "great for balancing" because it is so small. My experience has been that big heavy swords are better for balancing because they do not bounce around as much as smaller, lighter swords.
If there is any way for you to attend a tribal bellydance festival where there might be dance sword vendors, I strongly recommend that you try out several swords and buy the one you like best. If you buy a cheap little sword but then never use it, it was no bargain. -

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 4:31 AMI wish I could have the chance to attend a tribal festival, but all the ones I've ever heard about are quite a treck. That's an option I would prefer more, I'm always real big on poking, proding, and inspecting the crap out of things before buying it, sadly it's really not possible with this one.
Thank you for your advice.

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 9:36 AMok so I have a question. the Iberia scimitar and the balady scimitar look very similar but have a very big price difference. does anyone know what the actual difference between the two swords is? If they are pretty much the same then why not go for the cheaper option? -
-
Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 9:41 AMI think the reason for being more exspensive is the Iberian is larger and "battle ready" with an extremely sharp edge.
-
Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 10:00 AMWhat Erica said. The Cas Iberia is larger and is a "live blade"--very sharp, and apparently also a thicker shank--where the sword metal extends into the handle. If you look at the FAQ on the website, it talks about battle ready and what it means. The Balady is shorter, not sharp (except at the tip), the handle is smaller and a cheaper finish, and was designed for dancers, so they are specifically balanced for dancing!

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 11:57 AMSeconding what's already been said about size and "battle-ready". Why go for it? I have a Baladay and want to get a sharper, larger sword. I'd still use the Baladay when I'm learning more things (so I can reach out and grab the blade before it hits the ground) and if I'm dancing where people could come across my stage. I was once spinning with a sword on my head during performance and a kid ran right across the space. A smaller, unsharpened sword is easier to control when that sort of thing happens and there's less risk of accidentally hurting someone. So, I think it's good to keep a sword like the Baladay around for venues like that. It's a really good beginner sword, too. -

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 12:03 PMAnd if you keep the blade polished up, it still looks *really* impressive. I have a video on my profile you can check out, if you want to see it in action. Most people think it's a sharp sword.

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Fri, July 10, 2009 - 12:08 AMAtlanta Belly Dance has posted some reviews of different swords on youtube. The "Turkish Scimitar" is the Balady from Kult of Athena, which I have and like (as do many others).

I think they are going to put more up. Good luck! -

I just purchased a beginner 1 lb. sword from the bellydancestore. It does the job for now. -

Re: Advice on buying a sword.
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 4:57 PMI have both the CAS Iberia swords and Baladi swords. (And about 10 others...sword freak here, heh heh). The difference is not just the sharp blade, the Iberia is tooled as a real fighting sword, so the blade is very smooth and the balance point is closer to the hilt, making it move through space in a different way. It's a little weird to get used to because if you balance the CAS Iberia there is a ton of blade off one side. Also, the metal itself is better quality. The Iberia is tooled steel, very smooth but with a brushed-metal surface. The Baladi has a polished surface but the metal is lower quality but it's shinier, and the blade metal has some teeny ripples; hardly noticeable really. The overall length is shorter, too, and the blade of the baladi is thicker (i.e., the balance point is wider). Side by side on stage they look VERY similar. Check out this video of my troupe, where 3 of us have CAS Iberia and one has Baladi:
www.youtube.com/watch
The CAS Iberia works better for people with longer arms. -

Thu, September 3, 2009 - 4:57 PMThanks for the link and the input. I appreciate it.
I've been waiting months for the Baladi, so at this point I'm thinking of saving up for the CAS Iberia.
