I am afraid I may be wrong even labeling the style of dance I want to learn as "Gypsy" because you tube searches only show cabaret versions of "gypsy". I am looking for that saucy in-your-face version that goes so well with, say, Balkan Beatbox. (Think bouncing up-and-down shoulders, slapping the floor, big skirts and kicks)I had a taste of it from a teacher in BC but i was only there one month. I want to concentrate on studying it privately and can't even find videos of others dancing it! Does it go by another name? Does anyone even know what I am referring to?

Re: learning "Gypsy" Style Dance?
Mon, June 29, 2009 - 11:42 AMYou might try this one. It's pretty similar to what you're describing. www.gypsybellydance.com/gypsy_...os.html
I know of another one, but my brain isn't cooperating right now. I'll post when I remember it.

Re: learning "Gypsy" Style Dance?
Mon, June 29, 2009 - 12:55 PMLiz Strong is my favorite dancer who specializes in Turkish Rom dance...check out her clips on youtube if you like. Hannah Romanowsky also does wonderful Turkish Rom.
And fyi--there are many folks who consider the term "gypsy" to be a slur on the Rom people. It's still controversial, but something to be aware of. -

Re: learning "Gypsy" Style Dance?
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 5:16 AMTurkish Rom seems to becoming increasingly popular just this year there have been two workshops locally, one by Elizabeth Strong which I got the chance to attend. It was a wonderful workshop, kicked my butt but it was fun. The other one was done by Eva Cernik, I didn't get a chance to go but I've heard great things about it. I would recomend checking out both dancers.

Re: learning "Gypsy" Style Dance?
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 7:36 PMThat's pretty much what my troupe does. We call it "Fantasy Gypsy Fusion" because it's not authentic Rom, and it closest relates to the ren faire/Hollywood image when most people hear the word Gypsy.
