I was looking at something else entirely and came across this pattern for a stretch choli. I know nothing about the company, but I think I may order it sometime soon and try it out. It may take my a while to work up to it, though, I've never worked with stretch fabric.
Just thought I'd share!

Re: stretch choli pattern
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 8:43 AMDo tell us how it works out! All I know is working with stretchy stuff can be difficult when you stitch it. A serger is best, but use a zig zag on your machine of you don't have a serger. It keeps the "stretch" ability in your fabric. Good luck!

Re: stretch choli pattern
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 11:06 AMBuyer beware: this looks to me like the kind of choli that goes under a sari, not a dancers' choli. Also doesn't appear to be backless, and there is no underbust band, so there's nothing to keep the breasts in place. This just looks like a slightly cropped top.

Re: stretch choli pattern
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 5:15 AMHey Nicole!
I used the Annabelle one and once I got my groove on it was easy!
And once I got the pattern to print out to exact scale!!!
Although - I am going to try to go down a size on my next one!
I made THREE so far!
I wear my home made ones to class and save my nice professionally made one for performance! -

Re: stretch choli pattern
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 7:01 AMMaybe I'll give that one a shot. I have to get over this whole reluctance to work with sleeves at some point. I've only done it once and it was a royal pain. I guess it just takes practice, like anything. Thanks! -

Re: stretch choli pattern
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:01 AMWhen I do sleeves for a shirt, I sew the top seams of the shirt front and back together. Then I pin the sleeve on, Lining up all my marked points and sew it down, then I pin and sew the side seam working from the edge of the sleeve down, flip inside out and voila, shirt w/ sleeves. It is such a pain to sew the sleeve and the shirt pieces and then sew the sleeve to the shirt, I hate sewing on curves if I don't have to.

Re: stretch choli pattern
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:33 AMNichole! when I do sleeves, especialy on stretch fabric, I dont use the "set in" style of sleeve.
I do the rounded part on the body part of the pattern, then make my own SQUARE or rectangle sleeves. This helps TONS when it comes to lifting hands and not having the sides of your choli pull up!!
Its almost like having a gusset!

Re: stretch choli pattern
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 11:02 AMThe phrase "set in sleeves" sends me running in horror, but the Annabella sleeves are really simple to sew in. She doesn't muck about with gathering stitches and easing things in and all that, but just lets the stretchy fabric take care of all of that once you're wearing it. If I can do it, anyone can. -

Re: stretch choli pattern
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 8:00 AMI really liked this pattern for the edging she recommends, it makes the top look very finished and pretty. I just have to warn, this probably isn't the best project to learn to sew with. The material is VERY slippery and I needed a lot of help. Mom and I did it together :)

Re: stretch choli pattern
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 10:29 PMHey Annabella
your Choli pattern is really very beautiful. You are right about getting the darts to line up at the front. I get a buzz when I manage to do that (almost always) and it just looks so finished.
Sometimes I use ribbon or a soft cotton cord for the tie at the shoulders. Sometimes I thread a small bead on to the end - so it glitters a bit and weights down the cord, looking soooo pretty. I have used plain stretch velvet for the bodices with a different see through fabric for the sleeves. I have made drop sleeve tops with equal success.
The pattern is really wonderful. I have made the three sizes offered and they always work out so well.
Annabelle, thanks for sharing.

Re: stretch choli pattern
Fri, June 20, 2008 - 4:37 PMHi Susan
I've made Annabella's choli with success but wondered how you went about transforming it into a spilt shouldered one? Was it a case of tailoring the arm hole and the shoulder seam?
Any assistance gratefully received!
Thanks -

Re: stretch choli pattern
Fri, June 20, 2008 - 9:55 PMHi Lisa
I just sewed the sleeve to the top only 3 inches from underarm seam around towards the top on the back and front. Put the choli on and fiddle around with pinning the extra fabric into place. If you are happy with that, then trim off the excess fabric from the top of the sleeve and the shoulder and hand sew a little hem.
If you have skinny arms, the sleeve MIGHT droop a little or pucker at the armhole seam. You can do a bit of nifty tucking at the seam to get rid of the pucker.
By the way, I wrote a more detailed reply, but it got lost in the ether.
Cheers, Susan -

Re: stretch choli pattern
Fri, July 4, 2008 - 8:04 AMMuch thanks to you Annabella! I tried your choli pattern & it worked wonderfully. I made it short sleved for a practice top & wore it to class last week. Everyone was amazed that I made it. I'm emailing them all your site. I probably put in $3 for materials. Thank you SOOOOOO much.
