Hi all,

I am helping to organize a small belly dance festival in Oakland this spring. It will be on the campus of my beautiful wooded college, and will include performances, a shopping area, and a few workshops in our lovely professional dance studios.
Since I have never been on this end of a festival before, I have a few basic questions I hope one of you can help me with.
Firstly, what is the normal going rate for a merch table at a smaller festival?
Also, any suggestions for local Bay Area business that may want to sell their wares? I know of a couple that I am going approach, but the more the merrier.
I'd also love to get in contact with one or two drumming groups that may want to play at the festival.
And any more tips would be gladly appreciated!
By the way, this isn't an exclusively Tribal festival, I'd like there to be a nice variety of dancers and workshops showcasing some of the amazing talent the Bay Area has to offer.

cheers,

I'm now working with groups of women in residential rehab facilities for drug/alcohol addiction. The way I normally teach a cabaret bellydance class doesn't really work with these women because they come and go.

I'd like to review and/or relearn ATS cues/transitions in order to work with these women using this format--keeping in mind this is just an exercise or outlet for them that most won't pursue once they leave this facility--it's a way for me to bring them a little fun and introduce them to belly dance. To relearn the cues/transitions/moves I will need to do that by DVD.

So-here's my question: for learning the cues/transitions who do you feel has the better dvd's? Answer me privatey if you prefer. I have looked at FatChance and was on the 'net just now looking at Gypsy Caravan.

I'm putting together a list of good moves for new students, and would love your thoughts. This isn't an ATS class per se, but I'd like to introduce them to a variety of moves and styles.

If you were teaching totally new students, what would you start with? I want to have at least some moves that are easy enough that everyone "succeeds" but some that are impressive enough that even if they only come a few times, they can whip out a move at a bar. :-) Are there any good beginner moves that just shout "belly dance" to you?

BUT, they are still performing the SAME choreos that they learned in the first troupe--minor changes have been made but they are all still the same dances.

Most of the dances were learned at a seminar by the director of the first troupe many years ago and had become the "signature" dances of the first troupe, so since they weren't her ORIGINAL works the second troupe felt those dances were fair game for them to keep performing

What is your opinion on this? Is it ethical for the second troupe to keep doing the SAME dances they learned in the first troupe or should they have their own new material?

from my side for those who are interested in this kind of music i can reccomend:
Shiva in exile ('Manju' and 'Breathing' with indian vocal) , Solace (Album Satya and some remixes, i just love 'Saptak' ! ) , Karunesh (most of the songs are very ambient... but 'A Journey to India' and 'Punjab' are very catchy) , Endouser - Vishu's Eastern Block , Oojnami - sitare , Talvin Singh and Najma Akhtar - Ghoom Charakhna , Jehan - Rhythm Trance (and some other songs) , Niyaz (all songs)

"Belly dance". He said he is still trying to work on her about it. But I am really pissed about this.

So in the middle of processing all of the loss and shock and hurt I am trying to put my life back together, going back to work, and trying to listen to my dance music but not wanting to turn it up too loud., or even turn it on at all. Something inside me tells me no, it's too soon yet I think sometimes that my father would want me to keep doing the things that made me happy, like dancing and listening to great music (he was a well known big band drummer here in New England). Simply not even close to that right now. So my question to anyone out there that wants to answer is, how do you know when you are ready to pick it all up again, to dance and drill, to challenge yourself, to create new dances, etc.. I'm open to all suggestions. How did you get yourself through ?

I am just curious about how long people have been dancing, how much experience did you get before preforming, how long it took to feel like a dancer and not someone trying to dance?
I am curious because over the years I have been interested in bellydance and would take a class here or there follow a video etc. I had the basic knowledge of it but I didn't get serious about it until this year and I have to drive about an hour and a half to get to my class and go to workshops etc. I would like to get people in my community interested in dancing so I could have some people closer to home to dance with sometimes and I thought if I did a performance it might get people interested I love to dance and I feel like I am improving but I am unsure about performing I have been regularly bellydancing for about 6 months.
I would love to hear your stories about starting out or advice on working up to performance.
thanks

My teacher recently said the wrists should be below the elbows (she described it as holding a balloon in your armpits, so the arm is more or less straight). I have always heard the wrists should be above the elbows (like you are holding up a big beach ball, trying to avoid the T Rex arms). I'm wondering if that is a cab vs. tribal vs. american vs. traditional (middle eastern) thing, or a locality thing (Northern California vs. Southern California). If any other teacher told me to put my hands low, I have ignored them, lol.

So, where is your "go to spot" for your hands, where do you live/ have studied/ and what type of dancing have you studied?

I was thinking of the Nile as Texas has a city named for every place in the world. In our neck of the woods the Sabine river is well known.

I'm a dancer fetus, on the cusp of my birth, but I'm still months away from delivery!

It's been a year since I first discovered bellydance. I'm nowhere near what I thought I'd be by this time. Mostly due to my own fault, and getting married, but I suppose it's also because I never really took the time to figure all of this out. (BTW, this is my first post on tribe.net!) I just climbed out of bed today, and knew that it was time. I've bought the videos, a few books, and I'm about to splurge on a simple outfit from GeishaMoth that I've been oogling for the past two months. Fortune must be on my side, because I just moved to Okinawa and have already found a new teacher. I won't see her until Thursday, so I thought I'd do a little pre-class homework. Now, the question is:

Where do I seriously begin?

I've started with yoga, searching for the best DVDs and gym class listings out there. I've read numerous articles and watched over a 100 dance videos on youtube easily. I've gone though the DVDs I already have at least 50 times each, but I still feel as if I haven't really started... Is there anything I'm missing?

Help!

mardi love wrote me this week to announce that she's going to be in new orleans the week before halloween and would like to teach a few workshops, and asked if I would want to organize them. Wow! What an opportunity!

I've wanted to host other great dancers (e.g., our lovely Shay, here), but been scared--guarantees, flights, hotels, studio rent, keeping track of money, release forms, and who knows what?! (I'm *not* a Virgo). I'm getting a soft intro with Mardi because she's coming through anyway, so no flight/hotel. But what else do I need to be thinking about that I'm not?

thanks for your help.
big love for all,
ali

This will either make people love me or hate me.. but anyhoo...

As far as I know....

When my band Djinn was forming... and we were trying to figure out what our genre was... I felt we were very different from all the ATS (west coast) groups out there...

I came up with the term "East Coast Tribal" half-heartedly joking (and half not).... I was kind of playing off how hip/hop has discernable differences with West Coast and East Coast.

My groups music is this sort of Urban Middle Eastern:
http://www.DjinnNYC.com

I was referring to our group's type of MUSIC as "East Coast Tribal" and never was reffering to the dancing... We advertised ourselves as Djinn "East Coast Tribal" style music.

But the term has seem to have taken off and is now referring to the style of dancing happening in the very fast growing East Coast tribal scene...

So umm... hope everyone still likes me...
(ducking flaming messages about how the term existed before I thought of it...)

I've seen an interesting move at a couple different shows the last month or so--I've no idea if it's new, or just new here--usually done by a duet or a pair of duets. One partner spins and sets up as though she's going to do a Turkish drop with her back to her partner, but the other partner "catches" her before she hits the ground (as it were).

You can kinda see it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5OPG3Nb1ao&feature=related at about 6:23.

Is there a name for this? A good way to learn and do it, or start practicing it? I don't have a partner at the moment, but it looks like a fun little trick to toss into a performance.
I´m from Uruguay , but I live now in Brasil.
I was taking with fellow dancers at a bellydance conference and workshops and the subject about the new fashion that is going on in USA was talked about, and I am really confused about it. It is the Tribal Fusion scene that is mixing theatre ( well actually for many peoples comments ..bad acting or comedy that only americans really laugh at..sorry ) with bellydancing and drinking on stage and pretending to be drunk, so it is a performance of women bellydancing and sort of drunk or inhibited. I heard people in my community find it offensive.
I personally can understand or allow it because I like R.B, but I was really wondering if it is a positive thing, The thnig is so many people look up to the indigo so it becomes a cool thing to do. I have not been to a LSR show, but I have seen all the clips on youtube and even though it is in most of the acts, its still something the I´m restling with.
I would really love to read other peoples thoughts on this subject.
Thank you...

I work in a "roadhouse" theatre at a local college, where we get outside shows that come in to use our space and equipment for their productions. Lately (and for the next few weeks) we're chock full of local dance schools and studios putting on their summer recitals; I can tell you that I've seen some great choreography, some awful choreography, and a lot of fairly mediocre choreography in the last couple weeks.

Then I saw this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI5hfqGJzS4) posted on another thread, and it piqued my interest. That then led to a youtube hole, and I fell into videos with Donna Mejia, the Indigo, Gregory Hines and Savion Glover, Fred Astaire...

I'm wondering how those of you who do a lot of choreographing set yourselves up for it. I don't know if there are training programs out there, but the good, great, and wonderful choreographers I've worked with over the years all seem to have a few things in common:

*a steady sense of "the big picture": the ability to know how the audience is going to view, and react, to the whole dance as seen not from onstage or from within the troupe;

*lyrical sense: familiarity with the music that allows the choreographer to convey meaning to the audience through the dancer(s) without beating them over the head with it, so to speak;

*a good understanding of their dancer(s) ability and potential;

*a prodigious movement vocabulary.

Thing is...how do you GET that? Is it an ability that you have to have an affinity for, like drawing or music or math? Is it something you can learn--and if so, how? Does it come more easily with experience?

And what are some other qualities a good choreographer needs? I'm asking for my own direct curiosity and to spark discussion, too, so don't worry about staying directly on topic. :)

Rachel and the Indigo go on stage, strip off all the layers of jewelry, artifice and make-up, and dance Tribal Fusion in a simple dress and a scarf tied around their lovely waists........With the Indigo, it would come down to basic beautiful Tribal dance. " >

This got me thinking more about Fusion, and some of the things I'm seeing more. The changes in costuming, fusion with Theater etc. and the increasing use of non traditional music. (eg. not Near or Middle Eastern)
To me, the costume, jewelry etc is part of what makes the dance what is. It should 'set the the stage' visually, as the the music 'sets the stage aurally'.
When the step vocabulary is unchanged, sometime you only have costume elements or music to refence the time or place of a dance piece.
When these elements are removed, to me you end up with something more akin ( to me ) Interpretive or Modern dance. Not really 'Belly dance' ( i use this term for convenience. I'm not going into whether it is the correct one or not) However someone going to see 'belly dance' may be disappointed, or offended.
I'm not going to say 'not Arabic' because i feel Turkey and areas of the former Ottoman empire should be included in making up this dance form. This includes the Balkans.

At what point do you think it shouldn't be called Belly dance anymore, only 'based on', or 'inspired by'
Just curious~

just a question - its something I've noticed that seems to happen in a couple of cities here - where individual dancers might form part of this and that troupe, sometimes they are diversifying in styles such as cabaret and tribal fusion...sometimes I see individual dancers dabbling in different groups maybe for performance and dance opportunities? Im just wondering if this is so common, and if so how do you handle it?

it seems to me with two dynamic groups one would feel torn literally like a tug of war, that inevitably someone would be going crazy to keep up, or one group would suffer in respect to the main group being chosen.

Do you think while an individual dancer might feel satisfied to experiment, there might be resentment or conflict amongst the other troupe members? I know when we see individual dancers with three groups we sometimes wonder which group is being represented in particular performances....so I guess one off shoot is also that the style being represented could start to be "diluted" I guess from the other dance styles being inadvertently incorporated?

Thoughts? Experiences??

Cheers
Dee

It's very brief, but I was quite pleasantly surprised to see them...I think this is the first time I've seen fusion dancers in a movie...not that unusual to see traditional styles, but fusion? It's about freakin' time, I'd say!
Anyone happen to have a clue as to who the dancers are in the movie? I've looked for a clip, but there's none to be found...would be interesting to know who the ladies are that are paving the way for fusion in the movies!

On the surface it appears innocuous, but something about it makes me feel suspicious and I'm reluctant to reply. I think it's the language. Supposedly it's coming from the UK, but it doesn't read like the writer is a native English speaker. Not that I have anything against people who aren't NES, ya know, but something just doesn't seem quite honest here. Also, he mentions that his group will be performing "over there" but doesn't say where "over there" is. He's sending to a list because the TO: field says "undisclosed recipients". It just smells a little fishy. If anyone knows anything about this, I'd appreciate any information.
Greetings
I would like to book for 2 weeks classes for 3 hours each day monday to saturday (morning hours) for a group of 10. We are asking for 3 hours per day for 2 weeks - Monday - Saturday. A total of 36 hrs. We would be coming over for holiday and as part of our plans we need dance classes/private lessons in ANY of the following area Ballet, belly dance and Pre-Dance as well as Salsa, Swing and Ballroom. Do you have a training studio/facilty where you conduct the classes? Do you have rooms or is there any hotel close to your facility?

DATE: 5TH MAY TO 19TH MAY 2009

The group would be perfoming for a group of family members over there. I would love to get the total cost or a qoute/estimate. What are yor payment options? Do you accept credit cards?
I would be greatful if you will be willing to do the work to teach quality classes, make us happy and keep us coming back month after month!
I'm curious about something. I would like to know what people's opinions are about the etymology of Steampunk bellydance in our community. This is a subset that is growing in popularity in leaps and bounds, and I'm very curious to see what people interpret as the birth of Steampunk bellydance. I understand that with something that is still finding a place and character, there will be many different interpretations, and I'm not looking to set something up as gospel, I just want to know what people's experiences in this area have been. I haven't really seen any discussion on this topic, so I thought I would start one.

Please, this is not a thread about whether Steampunk is really bellydance or not, or anything like that; there is a myriad of threads that deal with that, but just one that wants to explore the roots of the movement.
